Sam and Loddington Equine Care

Recognising ethical practice of the highest standard

Sam is a fully qualified RCVS Registered Equine Veterinary Nurse.

She is the owner, the creator and the heartbeat of the Loddington Coppice Equine Healthcare Concept.

Sam has a burning desire to keep horses as naturally as possible while in the confines of our domestic environment, allowing them freedom of movement and freedom to express themselves as horses.

While adopting many of the track system lifestyle principles, Sam utilises this to bring cognitive harmony and expression to the horses in her care.

Loddington is set up to accommodate a small herd of free moving, free choice livery horses, but it also has a major role as an equine Nursing Care facility, with a strong ethos in the belief that clinical nursing needs the support of a healthy emotional balance, something which Loddington excels in providing.

The dry elevating treadmill

The treadmill offers consistent and controlled exercise, with its ability to elevate it allows for gentle increases in cardiac and respiratory function, great for supporting the recovery and rehabilitation needed for many complex medical cases, such as equine metabolic syndrome - a disease where we know that the control of insulin / glucose levels through exercise, is imperative for a successful outcome.

Further, the consistency of the surface and the ability to observe and even film the horses motion from multiple angles, allows for an analysis of movement which is hard to replicate in “normal” situations.

Taking the time it takes

Many horses can find that various forms of necessary treatment cause them fear, anxiety and stress.

At Loddington Sam uses positive reinforcement coupled with TIME!

Giving horses time to relax and process what’s needed is a valuable assett when it comes to gaining a successful treatment outcome.

The treatment room

The treatment room at Loddington is substantial in size and houses the walk on Combi-floor, Equine therapy - Vibration pulsed electromagnetic combined Weighbridge, a great bit of equipment used for treating a multitude of conditions and also doubles up as the dreaded weighbridge :-)

It has wide access doors which can be left open if a horse needs to feel less contained.

Sharing and learning new information is another cornerstone at Loddington and the treatment room with its heating and insulated floor doubles up and makes for a cozy and informal environment to be able to enjoy and gain the most from the experience.

“Box rest” at Loddington

No one, least of all Sam likes confinement of horses during recovery from illness or injury, but at times in order to optimise recovery, periods of confinement become necessary.

Again the Loddington ethos shines through, Loddington’s stables all have outside pens attached, allowing horses the freedom to choose whether they prefer to have some solitude and be out of the weather, or to be outside, watching all thats going on, with the wind blowing over them and the sky above.

Good emotional health helps the body heal.

Sam has a particular soft spot for donkeys yet, they are not native to the U.K. Originating from arid and warm parts of the world.

This can leave them vulnerable to our U.K. climate.

Loddington with its extensive mud free surfaces and large open access covered barn, goes a very long way to providing them with an optimum environment in which to thrive.

Hoofcare at Loddington

Barefoot

Boots and

Composite shoes

Hoofcare at Loddington is currently carried out by Mark Johnson Dip WCF, Mark has a passion for the whole horse approach and strives for equine health in the belief that, the healthier the horse, the healthier the feet and the better chance of them being able to serve the horse as nature intended.

Currently all the horses at Loddington are barefoot, with some being supported by hoof boots, it is highly unlikely we would ever have a metal shod horse here, as much for the dangers of animated herd interaction as anything, but we have on occasion used composite shoes for short periods as the need has arisen.

Loddington is not a closed house however and we welcome other hoofcare providers if, as an owner that is what you prefer.

Space to move, space for solitude and space for friends, Loddington doesn’t just provide “accommodation” for horses.

It accomodates them
